Macbeth - How it all came to be...

With 1 day to go till launch...

I thought I would discuss where the inspiration to write a series on Macbeth came from... so let's go back in time to the early 2000s

Macbeth was one of our set books for Literature class and I took pride in reading ahead. At the same time, I was also the school librarian and so getting myself a copy of the Shakespeare play, along with commentary, was not so difficult to do.

I read everything from the substance that made the play to the sources that Shakespeare used to bring out his story... Yes, I am talking about you Raphael Holinshed! Several things stood out for me from the whole story and the tragedy that was portrayed in the whole production (not just the ending). The realisation that came to Irish-German actor Michael Fassbender when he played the iconic title character in a film version of the play in 2015, is the same one that I had over a decade before that. Shakespeare's Macbeth suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder!

Shakespeare's Macbeth to K-Sad's Macbeth...

So while Shakespeare's Macbeth suffered from PTSD, I created my own. He was still a tragic figure but I wanted to dilute some of the supernatural and bring more to the fore the characteristic traits that Macbeth brings out of himself in the final act of the play. Someone fearless, brave, doesn't give up and is determined. While my early version of Macbeth was still a tyrant, he had a charm around him that would get anyone to like him. I mean he still did become King of Scotland somehow right?

Then some years later, when Wikipedia became a thing, around 2012, I rediscovered Macbeth, but a version much older than Shakespeare's... the Historical King of Scots! The attributes of Macbeth captured me, most notably the following:

  • A most noble ruler who presided over a prosperous Scotland for 17 years
  • A religious man who went to Rome on pilgrimage and gave a lot to the needy
  • A warrior King who united Scotland and defended it to the death against invaders
  • An almost complete 360 degree turn from Shakespeare's version (okay... this is debatable)
